Propagation & Cultivation
It is most easily propagated by dividing its thick underground rhizomes during the spring or early summer, though it can also be grown from its aromatic seeds. For successful cultivation, it requires a hot, humid tropical or subtropical climate and thrives in locations ranging from full sun to partial shade. The plant performs best in rich, fertile, organic-heavy soil that is kept consistently moist or waterlogged, making it highly tolerant of poorly drained garden areas. Once established, it is a low-maintenance, fast-growing plant that only requires a light application of organic fertilizer in the spring and the occasional removal of old, spent canes to encourage fresh, vibrant new shoots.
