Propagation & Cultivation
Vanilla is usually propagated through stem cuttings. Cuttings of 60–120 cm length are suitable for direct planting in the field. Cuttings shorter than 60 cm should not be planted directly; instead, they need to be rooted and raised in a nursery before planting. After collection, the stem cuttings should be washed thoroughly and dipped in 1% Bordeaux mixture or 0.2% copper oxychloride to control pathogenic fungi. The cuttings are then kept in a cool, shaded place for 2–3 days to allow partial moisture loss, which promotes better rooting.
